The ransomware team claiming responsibility for the attack on Nvidia has been hacked in the process.
Nvidia has initiated an inquiry into a hacker group that stole more than a terabyte of the company's data. On its Twitter feed, Vx-underground, an underground hacking group, claims that Nvidia has returned to the hacker's system and encrypted the stolen data.
Nvidia's software distribution server was infected by extortion organization LAPSU$, which illegally tapped into Nvidia's mailing system and installed malware. As a result, over 1TB of Nvidia data was allegedly stolen by the cyber organization. Data from Nvidia or its clients may have been compromised, but no one knows for sure. Only that Nvidia was investigating the incident was made public by the company's representative.
Nvidia appears to have figured out who's behind the attacks. Chipmaker Vx-underground claims to have infected the compromised machine with ransomware and encrypted the stolen data in reaction to the incident through Twitter and screenshots. However, the group in question claimed to have a copy of the material in its possession.
It's not the first time Nvidia has been to the rodeo. Back in 2020, SolarWinds was hacked, along with a number other high-profile firms, including Intel.
The fact that firms are taking matters into their own hands is rare, as the majority of victims prefer to pass the issue up to law enforcement agencies. Instead of reacting to attacks, Nvidia apparently went on the offensive, launching an attack against hackers. A backup may exist, but if so, Nvidia's efforts may have been for nothing.
