Apple announces Peek Performance event for March 8
Apple has planned a spring event in March - where it's expected to introduce a new iPad Air, a new iPhone SE with capability for 5G, and potentially a Mac machine or two. Here is everything you need to know about what is expected, including how to see these rumoured devices be introduced yourself.
When is Apple's March event?
Apple's spring event is slated for 8 March 2022 at 10am PST.
- San Francisco: 10am
- New York: 1pm
- London: 6pm
- Paris: 7pm
- New Delhi: 11:30pm
What to anticipate at Apple's March event
The speculated iPhone SE 3 is expected to be the main attraction of Apple's announcement. Recently leaked information suggests that Apple is working on a more affordable smartphone with 5G connection and the same A15 Bionic processor as its iPhone 13 series. When it comes to benchmark testing, A15 Bionic outperforms other mobile chipsets by a wide margin.
Considering the current model costs $400, a $300 iPhone SE would be a major surprise, according to at least one analyst. Another possibility being forth by Mark Gurman: Apple might reduce the current $199 price of the iPhone SE 2020 to just $149. Apple might become the undisputed king of low-cost smartphones if it makes this move.
Apple is rumored to be working on an iPad Air 5 that might be released on March 8th. An A15 CPU is expected for the tablet, while rumors of an OLED display for the iPad Air have been mixed. There is a possibility that the iPad Pro 2022 will be unveiled during Apple's spring presentation in 2019, although it seems like a long shot.
At the Apple Peek Performance event, a new high-end Mac mini could also be introduced. Apple insiders Mark Gurman and Ross Young have recently reported on similar findings. Before this week's Apple event, Gurman said he expected "at least one new Mac" announcement, and speculated that it may be the new Mac mini or iMac Pro 27-inch.
As for the iMac Pro, Young recently stated that it will not be available until the summer. So it's possible that the Mac mini is the gadget in question. Apple's latest silicon chips have previously been rumored to power the iPhone (likely the M1 Pro and M1 Max seen in the latest MacBook Pro models).
Three Macs were identified in Eurasian Economic Database files earlier this month. In the regulatory paperwork, two of the devices are referred to as personal computers, while the third Mac gadget is described as a portable computer (hinting that it could be a new MacBook). Because of this, we should expect to see the lower-cost MacBook Pro 2022 at the upcoming Spring event. For example, a DigiTimes article claimed that a new entry-level MacBook could be released in March of this year.
A few additional products could be unveiled, including AirPods Pro 2 and a MacBook Air, but on March 8 it seems most probable that the iPhone SE, iPad Air 5, and Mac mini will be there.
